Not Your Parents Vampire Story
Q. How did you become interested in supernatural
storytelling?
Michele Bardsley (MB) I've always liked the idea that there is
something more in this world than what we can see with our eyes. I
love the idea of ghosts and monsters and unexplained phenomena. It
might mean there's more to look forward to after this life. :-)
AJHarper (AH) I can't imagine a time in my life when I wasn't
interested in the fantastic from watching old Castle horror films on
TV to reading Stephen Kings Salem's Lot.
Q. What is it that is so captivating about vampires?
MB From a romance novelist's point-of-view the draw of vampire is
the fantasy of rescuing the sexy immortal with the tortured soul. Biting
and drinking blood is a very sensual act, but it's also the "ultimate
bonding and sharing" between vampires and their lovers.
AH Vampires possess a mystique that makes them undeniable,
you would be hard pressed to find any culture that doesn't have its
own version of the vampire. And lets face it, the vampire is the only
otherworldly creature you can dress up in a tux or evening gown and
look spectacular (try that with the mummy or the creature from the
Black Lagoon.)
Q. Where did you find the original impulse to write your novel?
MB I read an article by Charlaine Harris where she talked about how
she came up with the idea for her Southern Vampire series. Her spin
was to write what you know and add in those paranormal elements. I
know small towns and motherhood ... and I love paranormal
creatures. Viola. The PTA vampires in Broken Heart, OK were
created.
AH I firmly believe that urban teens would read more if there were
more books targeted toward them and young adult males would read
more if there were more books that empowered them. I found very
little in the way of offerings so if it was to be it was up to me.
Q Is your book a single novel or a series?
MB I'M THE VAMPIRE, THAT'S WHY is the first book in a series.
The next one, DON'T TALK BACK TO YOUR VAMPIRE, comes out
in July 2007.
AH: Night Biters is the first book of the Urban Horror series, the next
book will feature a werewolf, albeit a werewolf like you've never seen
Q Who are the main characters in your novel?
MB Jessica Matthews, widowed mother of two children, and Patrick
O'Halloran, 4,000-year-old Irish vampire.
AH Omari and Jamilah Jackson and a strong supporting cast that
includes Tioni, Dragonbrush and Jennifer
Q. What unique spin do you bring to the world of undead?
MB Uh ... I mentioned the undead parents, right?
AH I bring a urban edge to the traditional vampire story, for
example, what would happen if a vampire drank the blood of a
crackhead? The answer's in my book.
Q. Do you write for those who wish to be scared out of their
wits, sitting on the edge of their seats, or laughing
hysterically?
MB I like to throw in a few scares, but my main goal is to make
people laugh.
AH I'm clearly an edge of the seat kind writer but with drama and
suspense never blood or guts
Q. What can the reader always expect from your books?
MB: To find laughter and love and weirdness.
AH Action, fun and an Urban approach to the to traditional horror
story
Q. What other books have you done and what do you have on
the horizon?
MB I write paranormal erotica for Changeling Press, Ellora's Cave,
and Loose Id. I also have romantic comedies with Hard Shell Word
Factory and Whiskey Creek Press. My next projects are DON'T
TALK BACK TO YOUR VAMPIRE (July 2007, NAL/Signet Eclipse),
FANTASYLAND (November 2007, Erotica, NAL Trade), and DIARY
OF A DEMON HUNTER (2007, Erotica, Changeling Press).
AH Night Biters is the first for me

Every year a slue of vampire novels cram the shelves of book
stores around the country. If you are an avid reader of vampire
lore you start to realize much of whats out there is pretty much
the same but on occasion you'll find a vampire tale that offers a
fresh approach to the genre

I'm the Vampire that Why
Does drinking blood make me a bad mother? That's the question
single mom Jessica Matthews faces when she wakes from a savage
attack sucking on the thigh of Patrick O'Halloran, a super-hot Irish
vampire who'd generously offered his femoral artery to save her from
death...only to make her one of the undead.
Jessica can't rest until the beast that did this to her is caught.
Meanwhile, she's having trouble committing to Patrick (in the vampire
handbook, physical intimacy costs you several hundred years of
being bound together) and keeping her kids in line.
